
CSI graduates 38 nursing students
Among those
receiving degrees are firefighters, teachers and retired cops

The College of Staten Island celebrated the graduation of 38 nursing
students during its pinning ceremony yesterday in the Willowbrook
school's Center for the Arts.
Among the graduates were firefighters, retired police officers and
teachers.
"We have a lot of students for whom this is a second career," said
Professor Susan Coleman of the college's department of nursing. "Our
students have overcome much adversity to get to this place."
The ceremony's student speaker, Karen Acciarito-Slattery, earned a
perfect grade point average of 4.0 over the course of her studies.
After they were pinned, the graduates took part in a lamp ceremony
and recited the international pledge of nursing -- a rite of passage
that dates back to the 1890s.
