Novelist Erica Jong to speak at CSI graduation
Staten Island Advance - May 7, 2005
Novelist Erica Jong will be the commencement speaker
at the College of Staten Island’s 29th graduation ceremony on June
2, the college has announced.
Ms. Jong has received the United Nations Award for Excellence in
Literature, and Poetry magazine’s Bess Hokin Prize, as well as the
Deauville Award for Literary Excellence in France. She was awarded
the Sigmund Freud Award for Literature in Italy.
CSI President Dr. Marlene Springer said Ms. Jong "is known around
the world as a leader committed to women’s rights and freedom of
expression. She cares deeply about her commitments, and she
challenges us to overcome our fears. Her presence is sure to be
compelling, provocative and motivational."
This year’s ceremony —the largest in CSI’s history, with 2,200
baccalaureate and master degree candidates —will be held, rain or
shine, on the college’s Great Lawn in Willowbrook at 10 a.m.
Representing an alumni association with more than 50,000 members and
five regional councils, Ferdinand Alvaro, a 1975 graduate, also will
speak. He is a senior partner at Fitzhugh, Parker and Alvaro, a
leading minority-owned law firm.
The student speaker will be Sophia Tamezrian. One of six children
reared by a single mother in war-torn Beirut, Ms. Tamezrian has a
4.0 grads point average in accounting, with minors in economy and
finance. The Brooklyn resident said her speech will focus on her
“strong belief that education is the key both to personal and
professional advancement.”
