Graduates will have fine example to follow
2 'socially
responsible' leaders will speak at College of Staten Island's
business commencement ceremony
Staten Island Advance - May 23, 2005
It's interesting to learn that the College of Staten Island (CSI),
Willowbrook is the largest urban university in the country. Its
204-acre modern campus is the largest in New York City, and includes
picturesque surroundings. Its facilities are among the most
up-to-date of any college.
The College's 29th commencement ceremony will take place on June 2
on the Great Lawn.
According to Dr. Eugene R. Garaventa, professor of management at
CSI, the Department of Business will conduct its own exercises
following the ma5-23-05in ceremony.
This year, two community leaders have been invited to address the
business graduates -- Charles LaGanga and Dr. Mohammed Khalid.
"For the first time the department has asked two active members of
the Staten Island community to address its graduates, Charles
LaGanga and Dr. Mohammed Khalid," Dr. Garaventa remarks.
The department's selection was based on their success in their
chosen fields. LaGanga is the managing director of Direct Access
Partners, Manhattan, and Dr. Khalid is a practicing dentist in
Eltingville.
More importantly, the two men were selected because they are
excellent examples of entrepreneurs who are socially responsible and
"give back" to the community.
"They clearly understand and practice stakeholder management. It is
hoped that the degree recipients of the Business Department will
emulate the behavior of Charles LaGanga and Dr. Mohammed Khalid as
they begin their professional careers," says Dr. Garaventa.
Other notable former speakers have included Surrogate John Fusco;
John Amodio, Commerce Bank vice president; Public Administrator Gary
Gotlin; Developer R. Randy Lee; and Robert Cutrona, president of
Project One, Inc.
