CSI Hosts NY Times
Bestselling Author
Staten Island, NY – September
20, 2005 - New York Times bestselling author Alan Tennant will
bring his tales of radio-tracking the transcontinental migration of
peregrine falcons to the Center for the Arts on the campus of the
College of Staten Island/CUNY (CSI) on Thursday, October 6 at
7:30pm.
Tennant is the author of On the Wing: To the Edge of the Earth with
the Peregrine Falcon, named as one of The New York Times’s “100 Best
Books of 2004,” as well as the recipient of the New York Public
Library Award, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Book Prize in
Science and Technology. On the Wing tells the story of Tennant’s
uniquely in-depth study of these majestic birds from the Texas
barrier islands to the Arctic to their eventual return to the warmer
climates of Mexico, Belize, and the Caribbean. At the helm of this
adventure is Tennant’s partner in falcon chasing, George Vose, a
septuagenarian World War II veteran who trusts his instincts as much
as his instruments. As the two men nearly lose their lives and run
afoul of the law in the race to keep their birds in view and their
rattletrap Cessna gassed up and running, Tennant renders with
gorgeous precision and skill the landscape and wildlife they pass on
the way and the falcons that direct their course.
An author of a number of books on nature and wildlife, Tennant has
traveled
throughout the world on a variety of natural history adventures
including whale watching off the coast of Baja California,
whitewater canoe rafting through the Big Bend Canyons of the Rio
Grande, a Darwin lecture series in the Galapagos Islands, and
safaris to the Amazon and Africa.
Tennant’s CSI lecture is made possible through the generosity of
Michael Shugrue. A reception and book signing will follow.
