NYS's first African-American woman CPA presents
"It's Not a White Collar Profession"
Staten Island, NY – April 11, 2005 –
In 1954,
Bernadine
Coles
Gines
became the first African-American woman Certified Public Accountant
(CPA) in
New York state, and the 34
th African American CPA in the
U.S.
This week, the
Accounting Club presents
Ms.
Gines
in an historic lecture presentation at the College of Staten
Island (CSI). She is a good figure for us to present,
with a great message for the community says
Taiwo
Olasupo
, president of the CSI accounting club, and vice president of the
college's student government.
She is an
African-American woman of great achievement and accomplishment,
Olasupo continued, and we are ecstatic that she will join us and
share her experiences with the college and
Staten Island community."

Gines graduated from
Virginia State College. She received a BS in Business
Administration and was ranked first in her graduating class. In
1947, she earned her Master's of Business Administration (MBA) from
New York
University
She has been featured in the book A White Collar Profession:
African American Certified Public Accountants since 1921.
The event is free
and open to the public. It is sponsored by the CSI Accounting
Club.
